What’s the best cat litter?

Given that I sell the stuff, I’m often asked by friends and family: what’s the best cat litter?

It’s an easy question to answer, because the truth is it’s what made me set up my cat litter shop a few years ago. At the time, I owned two cats, and because I lived in a 3rd floor flat, they were both ‘indoor’ cats. As any owner of indoor cats will know, having the right cat litter was very important, as it was where all the ‘action’ happened for both cats. At the time I was using a bentonite based product, having found the alternatives (mainly wood based products) would tread too easily around the house.

At a trade show I was offered a small sample bag of silica cat litter, and so I took it home and tried it. I was amazed: the bag lasted for ages, but more importantly, because of the dessicant nature of silica, the litter tray was suddenly odour free. The silica would quickly dry out any urine or stools deposited and leave the tray smelling fresh (ok, relatively fresh… you wouldn’t catch me camping in there).

Since then I’ve always used silica litter for my cats. It can seem a little bit more expensive at first, but once you realise how long each bag lasts for, you soon realise that actually it’s the best value cat litter on the market. So there you have it. In my opinion, the best cat litter is silica cat litter.
